Ashtanga Weekend with Richard Freeman
The Body as the Ground of Awakening: Alignment as Mudra

October 13 - 14, 2007

The relationship between Prana (feeling and sensation patterns) and citta (thought and imagination patterns) makes the Human body a doorway into levels of awareness both subtle and radiant.

In this intensive we will begin by using the present pattern of our awareness to hook into the central axis of both the physical and the imaginative bodies. At the heart of the Ashtanga system the core postures, the bandhas, the drishtis and the breathing rhythms are so simple and yet so subtle that most practitioners overlook them. By exploring these core techniques we will find new freedom and grace in the present. We will play with the paradoxes of breathing and the complementarity of technique to open the central axis of the body into a universal form. Meditation, pranayama and asana all blossom in our attention to new and exquisite details, alignment and flow.

Core Mudras and the Essential Tricks

Learn to use Drishti, Bandha and the continuous refinement of technique to awaken the core of the body. We will play with the paradoxes of breathing and the complementarity of technique to draw through the central axis of the body a kind of satisfying metaphorical milk. Experiencing a paradox in motion at the heart of the Vinyasa system allows us to turn our postures into mudras of feeling and expression.

Richard Freeman has been a student of yoga since 1968. He has spent nearly nine years in Asia studying various traditions which he incorporates into the Ashtanga yoga practice taught by his principal teacher, K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India.

His background includes Zen and Vipassana Buddhist practice, Bhakti and traditional Hatha Yoga in India, Sufism in Iran and starting in 1974, an in-depth study of Iyengar yoga. He is still an avid student of both Western and Eastern philosophy, as well as Sanskrit. His ability to juxtapose various viewpoints, without losing the depth and integrity of each, has helped Richard develop a unique, metaphorical teaching style. He lives with his family in Boulder, Colorado where he is the director of the Yoga Workshop.
